Tollhouse Gallery – Design a Deckchair Compeitition **WINNER**
Clevedon Pier volunteers ran a nationwide Deckchair Design Competition in the spring.  Over 180 designs were submitted by members of the public and by a clutch of celebrities who love Clevedon Pier themselves. Artists from around the UK took part with the winners coming from East Sussex, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Dorset, Bristol, Clevedon, Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset towns and villages. The winners’ chairs are now being exhibited at the Tollhouse Gallery Clevedon Pier in North Somerset.  Six designs by well known TV presenters Gyles Brandreth (BBC’s One Show) and Alice Roberts (BBC’s Coast and Time watch), plus a special design by creator of Wallace and Gromit Nick Park are for auction for the Clevedon Pier Charity. Deckchairs designed by rock band The Stranglers and folk band The Wurzels also feature in the auction.  Tiny deckchair replicas of all these designs can be purchased to order via the websitewww.clevedonpier.com.
The standard of artworks submitted was very high and the five judges had a real challenge to select the winners. The winning design from a local resident was produced by Jacqueline Hammond who is as an ‘up and coming’ artist based in Brighton.  She has been working on a range of deckchair designs launched earlier this year, so the competition was perfect timing and an ideal opportunity for her to show her designs to a new audience.  It was actually a couple Jacqueline met at the launch, who are big fans of Clevedon, that suggested she should enter.Jacqueline says ” With my design, you can sit on the beach from the comfort of your own home!”
The winning deckchair designs are on display in the Tollhouse Gallery on Clevedon Pier The Beach, Clevedon BS21 7QA from Friday 26th July till August 20th. Entry to the gallery is free and it is open from 10 to 5pm every weekday and 10 to 6 at weekends.  We are also holding two late night openings on Friday 26th and August 16th.  See the Deckchair Exhibition on Facebook “Since opening the show the gallery stewards have tried to capture the total visitor numbers, although at times the gallery has been so busy we have lost track!  Needless to say with the recent sunny weather we have had several hundred people in the gallery who have admired your design since we opened a week ago. “Jonquil Brooks – Pier volunteer
My deckchair has been out and about since we exhibited it at a trade show earlier in the year. It’s proved a hit with visitors to Portsmouth Spinnaker Tower.
Jenny Merrison, duty manager at Spinnaker Tower, commented:“The deckchair has become a great talking point for our shop visitors and really brightens up the window! Jacqueline is a very talented artist and we’re delighted to have a piece of her art on display.”Jacqueline Hammond's Deckchair in the window at Spinnaker TowerJacqueline Hammond’s Deckchair in the window at Spinnaker Tower – Portsmouth

Smartdeco is ‘Bang on Trend’

Found this in The Sunday Times Style Magazine at the weekend (24th Feb 2013). The model’s eye make up bears an uncanny resemblance to my ‘Love’ painting as pictured here in my brochure. Ironically the article uses this as an example of how ‘not’ to do your make up!!

Smartdeco must be ‘bang on trend’ as the parallels didn’t stop there. In fact a very similar palette is used throughout the magazine as well as a fashion feature that recreates a beach scene. Just soooo trendy, yah!!!

Okay they’re shades of the primary colours but us artists can’t help but see these things and make the connections. Like feeds like. I’d certainly like to own that blue bag to carry all my clobber around. Pity I can’t afford the price tag so I’ll stick to my cheerful, roomy ‘Love and Hate Tote Bag’

Smartdeco bring the beach to Birmingham and art off the wall at Spring Fair International

Smartdeco stand at Spring Fair 2013- Hall 6(6Q42) (5)
Life’s a beach art print deckchair by Jacqueline Hammond in the new product showcase at spring fair 2013 – Smart Deco was in Hall 6- Design Lab, Contemporary homeware and gifts – Spring Fair International 2013 at Birmingham NEC. For more info go to http://www.smartdeco-style.com. Buy online at http://jacquelinehammond.co.uk/site/index.php/smart-deco-collection/deckchairs.html

Earlier this month I exhibited at a well known trade show, Spring Fair International 2013 at Birmingham’s NEC. It took a lot of hard work to get to this stage, upon arrival to set up I was absolutely shattered, and yet slung on my paint splattered lab coat, quite enjoying the irony that the Smartdeco stand (6Q42) was located in the Design Lab – a new product showcase right next to the ‘Trend Bar’ in Hall 6 – Contemporary Gifts and Home. We were the last to leave the NEC(k) (as the French exhibiting contingent refer to our ‘Palais de exhibicion’. The reason being that I had decided I would paint a sunset beach scene on the actual stand, as the beach scene on the banner I’d ordered looked more like monsoon than summer season, it was so dark! Despite being given permission to work late we were still faffing over sand bags, yes sand bags, not handbags, bags filled with bags of sand, way after the curfew and had been given our final ‘warning’ by the Goodie Green Jacket on night shift. We left the  ‘few props short of a final scene’  stand on his command.   Given another ten minutes we’d have been ‘voila!’

From Sunday kick off they streamed in to ‘The Neck’by the bus load and the I was exhilarated by the flood of gusto people had for the products I’d finally brought to market. It was fantastically full on, as busy as Brighton pier the amount of daytrippers we had, stopping to admire the view. The response to my work was fantastic and it was a pleasure to talk to lots of people after months sat at a computer screen! We received a great deal of interest in the Smartdeco range from visitors to the show and the Life’s a Beach Deckchair proved to be a real showstopper! We even brought some Brighton rock, buckets and spades an’ all! Hot!

Smartdeco Demonstrates how to decorate with art – Make art the fabric of your home

‘Spring Fair International’, 3-7 February 2013, Birmingham NEC, stand 6Q42

Brighton. Successful Brighton-based artist, Jacqueline Hammond, is launching
her Smartdeco (http://www.smartdecostyle.com ) range of “functional art”
products at the prestigious ‘Spring Fair International’ exhibition, taking
place at Birmingham NEC from 3-7 February, 2013. Based on the concept of
”art you can use as well as admire”, the products include interior, garden
and lifestyle accessories featuring images taken from Jacqueline’s popular
fine art prints.

With her Smartdeco product range, Jacqueline has succeeded in bringing “art
off the wall and on to the sofa”. Buyers can install something beautiful and
purposeful in their home, while also obtaining an artwork that will
appreciate in value over time. Key products include paintings, prints,
lampshades, cushions, duvet covers, art print deckchairs, lampshades, tea
towels, shopper bags, mugs and cards.

Primarily a painter but also a multidisciplinary artist, Jacqueline is
renowned for producing strong, punchy images that are rich in texture and
colour. Brilliant red poppies, dramatic coastlines, seascapes, cityscapes
and vibrant abstracts all typify Jacqueline’s style and subject matter.

Working from her studio in Brighton, Jacqueline is regularly commissioned by
individual clients and high profile brands alike. After successfully selling
limited edition prints of her works on paper and canvas, she decided that
printing on to housewares would be the logical next step.

This saw the formation of Smartdeco, where Jacqueline has launched her
boutique-style collection of functional art pieces. With a focus on fine
detail, she has used archival-quality printing methods to reproduce artworks
on to soft furnishings and household textiles. All products achieve a
hand-painted look with vivid colours and add a hint of decadent luxury to
the home interior.

Best-selling designs in the collection include those based on Jacqueline’s
popular ‘Signification of the Poppy’ series. Meanwhile, her ‘Life’s a Beach
Deckchair’ has featured in the ‘Wall Street Journal’, ‘Sunday Telegraph’ and
’The Alan Titchmarsh Show’ (ITV1, October 2012).

Smartdeco will also market products by other British artists and designers,
selected for their excellence and originality. All products are printed by a
British company recognised for its pioneering work in the digital print
industry.

Jacqueline Hammond says: “Today, art is not just something to hang in a
frame. In the contemporary housewares sector, we’re seeing an increasing
movement towards ‘functional art’ that has a practical purpose, as well as
being beautiful. With Smartdeco the idea is to pioneer that trend and bring
artworks off the wall so they can adorn and serve the home interior and be
useful in different properties, spaces and living rooms.”

Jacqueline Hammond is launching Smartdeco at ‘Spring Fair 2013’, Stand 6Q42.
Smartdeco offers a bespoke service to clients: if an image is required in a
different style, size or colour to the catalogue item, it can usually be
arranged. Many listed products require a lead time of two to four weeks to
deliver. Images of artworks are available for print or licensing purposes.
