Among the other Birmingham venues to play house and techno music through the night was Tin Tins, which opened on Smallbrook Queensway in 1990, in a former Indian restaurant called The Pride of India.
Originally established to expand the range of gay nightlife in the city, Tin Tins attracted acts included two appearances by a then-unknown Take That. The DJ of the time remembers seeing the boy band stuffing socks down their cycling shorts when he went into their dressing room to tell them they they were due on stage in a few minutes.
The club gradually broadened its clientele and became an all-night dance club – including a weekly after-hours night called Hype – but closed in 1997 after a police drugs raid. The building was demolished in 1999 and the site is now occupied by Debenhams in the new Bullring shopping centre.
In 1992, with house music established as the mainstream club sound, the nights Wobble and C.R.E.A.M. were launched in the city. Soon after came the Marco Polo Bar, which opened its doors at 7am and gave the clubbers somewhere to continue partying after sunrise.
The idea of glamorous clubbing arrived in 1993 with Miss Moneypenny’s, a theme night in Bonds nightclub. In 2001, Miss Moneypenny’s left Bonds and held events at other clubs including Subway City and then found a new home in Liberty’s on the Hagley Road in 2002.

Tollhouse Gallery – Design a Deckchair Compeitition **WINNER**
Clevedon Pier volunteers ran a nationwide Deckchair Design Competition in the spring. Over 180 designs were submitted by members of the public and by a clutch of celebrities who love Clevedon Pier themselves. Artists from around the UK took part with the winners coming from East Sussex, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Dorset, Bristol, Clevedon, Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset towns and villages.The winners’ chairs are now being exhibited at the Tollhouse Gallery Clevedon Pier in North Somerset. Six designs by well known TV presenters Gyles Brandreth (BBC’s One Show) and Alice Roberts (BBC’s Coast and Time watch), plus a special design by creator of Wallace and Gromit Nick Park are for auction for the Clevedon Pier Charity. Deckchairs designed by rock band The Stranglers and folk band The Wurzels also feature in the auction. Tiny deckchair replicas of all these designs can be purchased to order via the websitewww.clevedonpier.com.
The standard of artworks submitted was very high and the five judges had a real challenge to select the winners. The winning design from a local resident was produced by Jacqueline Hammond who is as an ‘up and coming’ artist based in Brighton. She has been working on a range of deckchair designs launched earlier this year, so the competition was perfect timing and an ideal opportunity for her to show her designs to a new audience. It was actually a couple Jacqueline met at the launch, who are big fans of Clevedon, that suggested she should enter.Jacqueline says ” With my design, you can sit on the beach from the comfort of your own home!”
The winning deckchair designs are on display in the Tollhouse Gallery on Clevedon Pier The Beach, Clevedon BS21 7QA from Friday 26th July till August 20th. Entry to the gallery is free and it is open from 10 to 5pm every weekday and 10 to 6 at weekends. We are also holding two late night openings on Friday 26th and August 16th. My deckchair has been out and about since we exhibited it at a trade show earlier in the year.It’s proved a hit with visitors to Portsmouth Spinnaker Tower.

This irreverent image of Her Majesty is a painting by British artist Jacqueline Hammond. Created in 2007 titled ‘The Queen in a Moment of Privacy’
Jacqueline has released some alternative memorabilia to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee latest hype in the UK and the large proportion of people who are ambivalent about the monarchy, or simply don’t like pomp and plastic tat, may wonder what the fuss is about. Some of the Diamond Jubilee memorabilia takes itself far too seriously, such as those plaster Queens, commemorative plates and ceramic corgis. Other items descend into utter tack, such as Union Jack dresses, tutus, wigs and plastic hats that will no doubt be appearing in Benidorm this summer.
These collector’s items depict an iconic, postage stamp type portrait of Her Majesty enjoying a private moment; in which she is caught in the ‘disgusting but we all do it’ act of picking her nose. The original work entitled ‘The Queen in a Moment of Privacy’ was an entry in the ‘Seeking Picasso’ competition, held in Brighton during 2007, in which Jacqueline was a finalist. She also caricatured the Royal Family on other occasions: for example, in 2011, her ‘Pebble Heads Royal Wedding’ painting used pebbles carefully selected from Brighton Beach as the character’s heads.
So, no need to buy an expensive porcelain plate that you’ll only use once or twice or a plastic union jack this summer, why not shirk the trend say “hurrumph” to the royal family and choose one of my alternative ideas to commemorate?
Choose from bags, mugs and prints all set to adorn the shoulders, coffee tables and walls of UK citizens who don’t want to stand in the street cheering and waving flags.
