The search continues for the best artistic talent of 2017

We’re searching for the best British and Irish contemporary art, photography and moving image of 2017. This year’s judging panel consists of Royal Academician Hughie O͛Donoghue, artist Jane McAdam Freud, former NOA winner Kelvin Okafor, gallery director Cynthia Corbett, photographer Zelda Cheatle and filmmakers Elaine Pyke and Adam Saward. All artwork is judged strictly anonymously on talent, not connections and results in an exhibition of 100% of the open entries – not one ‘invited’ artist. By entering your work, you’ll be in with a chance of winning part of a £60,000 prize fund and being showcased in prestigious exhibitions in London and beyond. Submit your work today, or read on for more information.

“NOA is a wonderful platform for artists, a truly open competition, offering the opportunity not only for artists to exhibit their work in first class venues but the chance of being recognised and the possibility of being selected for one of the many prizes. The competition itself gives a real ͚snapshot of current practice in the UK and Ireland.” – Hughie O͛Donoghue RA – 2017 Chair Judge

EXHIBITIONS

21st National Open Art Exhibition 17 – 26 November 2017 Announced

A vast, untouched four-storey industrial building will host the 21st National Open Art Exhibition. Bargehouse is an exciting atmospheric space on London’s fast moving South Bank and Bankside areas and sister building to the iconic landmark, Oxo Tower which stands proud on the cultural path between the National Theatre and Tate Modern. This big blank canvas will be transformed into a contemporary gallery space to showcase a cross-section of the very best British and Irish contemporary art of 2017. Enter the 21st National Open Art Competition here or read on to learn more…

A programme of events will be taking place during the exhibition with collaborations between NOA Vice President Gavin Turk and Deborah Turk’s House of Fairy Tales along with Be Smart About Art, Explore Learning and more to be announced. Sign up to be the first to know our lastest news here.

Royal Academician Hughie O’Donoghue, artist Jane McAdam Freud, former NOA winner Kelvin Okafor, gallery director Cynthia Corbett, influential photographer Zelda Cheatle and filmmakers Elaine Pyke and Adam Saward are to judge the 21st National Open Art Competition. Read more about our judges here.

Professional and amateur artists aged 15 and over can now submit work to the main 2017 competition. Each entry is judged anonymously, making the competition one of the most democratic in the UK and Ireland operating today.

This year’s finalists will be exhibited at the 21st National Open Art Exhibition at Bargehouse Oxo Tower Wharf on Southbank in London this Autumn where the prizewinners will be announced. The 500 long-listed entries from this year’s competition will be anonymously published after the first round of judging for the World Art Vote where the public can view the works and have their say by voting for their favorite on the NOA website.

Tollhouse Gallery – Design a Deckchair Compeitition **WINNER**
Clevedon Pier volunteers ran a nationwide Deckchair Design Competition in the spring.  Over 180 designs were submitted by members of the public and by a clutch of celebrities who love Clevedon Pier themselves. Artists from around the UK took part with the winners coming from East Sussex, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Dorset, Bristol, Clevedon, Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset towns and villages. The winners’ chairs are now being exhibited at the Tollhouse Gallery Clevedon Pier in North Somerset.  Six designs by well known TV presenters Gyles Brandreth (BBC’s One Show) and Alice Roberts (BBC’s Coast and Time watch), plus a special design by creator of Wallace and Gromit Nick Park are for auction for the Clevedon Pier Charity. Deckchairs designed by rock band The Stranglers and folk band The Wurzels also feature in the auction.  Tiny deckchair replicas of all these designs can be purchased to order via the websitewww.clevedonpier.com.
The standard of artworks submitted was very high and the five judges had a real challenge to select the winners. The winning design from a local resident was produced by Jacqueline Hammond who is as an ‘up and coming’ artist based in Brighton.  She has been working on a range of deckchair designs launched earlier this year, so the competition was perfect timing and an ideal opportunity for her to show her designs to a new audience.  It was actually a couple Jacqueline met at the launch, who are big fans of Clevedon, that suggested she should enter.Jacqueline says ” With my design, you can sit on the beach from the comfort of your own home!”
The winning deckchair designs are on display in the Tollhouse Gallery on Clevedon Pier The Beach, Clevedon BS21 7QA from Friday 26th July till August 20th. Entry to the gallery is free and it is open from 10 to 5pm every weekday and 10 to 6 at weekends.  We are also holding two late night openings on Friday 26th and August 16th.  See the Deckchair Exhibition on Facebook “Since opening the show the gallery stewards have tried to capture the total visitor numbers, although at times the gallery has been so busy we have lost track!  Needless to say with the recent sunny weather we have had several hundred people in the gallery who have admired your design since we opened a week ago. Jonquil Brooks – Pier volunteer
My deckchair has been out and about since we exhibited it at a trade show earlier in the year. It’s proved a hit with visitors to Portsmouth Spinnaker Tower.
Jenny Merrison, duty manager at Spinnaker Tower, commented:“The deckchair has become a great talking point for our shop visitors and really brightens up the window! Jacqueline is a very talented artist and we’re delighted to have a piece of her art on display.”Jacqueline Hammond's Deckchair in the window at Spinnaker TowerJacqueline Hammond’s Deckchair in the window at Spinnaker Tower – Portsmouth
