Kemptown Light Painting Sold – Last in the bestselling Brighton Sunsets series by Jacqueline Hammond

SOLD on Saatchi Art – this piece ‘Kemptown Light’ (70x70cm acrylics on canvas)

This painting by Brighton based artist Jacqueline Hammond has now been purchased by a collector from France on the Saatchi Online website.

The painting is a favourite of many and is actually the last in the ‘Brighton Tidal Sunsets’ series of paintings to be snapped up. All the original artworks in this series have now sold. The buildings of Kemptown and the Victorian arches that stretch the length of the seafront are detailed in the painting. Each piece in the collection (untypically) depicts the view looking east of Brighton Palace Pier towards the Marina, which isn’t often painted by Brighton’s artists.

Save Madeira Terraces! Campaign to Restore Brighton’s Iconic Seafront

Save Madeira Terraces! Campaign to restore Brighton’s Iconic Seafront

I donated several prizes for the raffle to raise funds to restore the arches where I used to have a #studio #gallery open to the public for several years until it’s closure.

Photos of pieces donated, followed by pictures of Jag Gallery on Madeira Drive, now and then:

SAVE MADEIRA TERRACES! There’s a campaign going, run by volunteers raising funds in any way they can and they are working really hard to raise funds to save, restore and hopfully eventually make sound use of the iconic ironwork archways and upper terraces that run the vast length of Brighton’s iconic seafront on the ‘neglected’ east side of the pier. This vast stretch could be used for any number of purposes and one part used to provide AFFORDABLE studio/shop space for the public to wander in and could’ve become an evolving community scene and space on the less tourist side. Imagine if the terraces were more like La Ramblas in Barcelona – full of street food stalls, passing traders, artists, makers, performers and fly pitchers…(install a jukebox and liven these stiffs up!!) The council have seemed to have given up so give it back?! Anyway myself and several other folks have donated prizes so ‘roll up roll up’ – buy a ticket, everyone’s a winner! Well in that it might be open again one day for all to enjoy. Points make prizes and pounds restore the seafront infrastructure. #peoplepower

The Rainbow Effect – Will it be Jet Washers at Dawn for the Brighton Rainbow Crossing?

The Rainbow Effect

You only have to check out the Brighton Rainbow Crossing Forever page on Facebook to see how the rainbow has enchanted visitors and local people of all ages and persuasions. I should know as an exhibiting resident artist at JAG Gallery from the view outside my painting studio, I’ve seen the rainbow working its magic. It’s made Madeira Drive come alive rather than being treated as a car park.

Though not officially a crossing, as a piece of public ‘street’ art it encourages pedestrians to stop, look and listen and motorists to slow down, creating a traffic calming effect and rather magical effect. The rainbow effect on both visitors and locals to the area is a joy to see.

This truly is a piece of public art at street level,  the rainbow has enchanted locals from all walks of life, groups and persuasions seen posing, performing and most of all, smiling somewhere over the rainbow.

Perhaps it’s time to develop this area. From Charleston to Morris dancing, bikers and beatniks. The rainbow’s proved to be a hit symbol of solidarity that reaches beyond Pride. Brighton and Hove city council wont solve the crossword by washing away the rainbow; I think we can safely say those who’ve seen the rainbow effect this past week would like to keep making Brighton safer, as well as brighter.

Call me a hippy but whatever happened to rainbow warriors and CND symbol of peace? Other cities have grown to love this type of rainbow and realise its many benefits, while the creators have been granted permissions

The rainbow – due for eradication by Brighton & Hove council on [16th June at 5am] – stretches across Madeira Drive from the artist’s quarter. It was created by Heather Peace, Zeezee TwentyTwo, Cassette Lord, Inky Biscuits Ltd, Caia Matheson, Sonia Canals, Julieanne Gilburt, Jag Gallery resident and local artists.
