Save Madeira Terraces! Campaign to restore Brighton’s Iconic Seafront

I donated several prizes for the raffle to raise funds to restore the arches where I used to have a #studio #gallery open to the public for several years until it’s closure.

SAVE MADEIRA TERRACES! There’s a campaign going, run by volunteers raising funds in any way they can and they are working really hard to raise funds to save, restore and hopfully eventually make sound use of the iconic ironwork archways and upper terraces that run the vast length of Brighton’s iconic seafront on the ‘neglected’ east side of the pier. This vast stretch could be used for any number of purposes and one part used to provide AFFORDABLE studio/shop space for the public to wander in and could’ve become an evolving community scene and space on the less tourist side. Imagine if the terraces were more like La Ramblas in Barcelona – full of street food stalls, passing traders, artists, makers, performers and fly pitchers…(install a jukebox and liven these stiffs up!!) The council have seemed to have given up so give it back?! Anyway myself and several other folks have donated prizes so ‘roll up roll up’ – buy a ticket, everyone’s a winner! Well in that it might be open again one day for all to enjoy. Points make prizes and pounds restore the seafront infrastructure. #peoplepower

British artist Jacqueline Hammond’s novelty series The Pebble Heads progressed into numerous commissioned portraits where the subjects heads are ‘pebblised’ onto the canvas.

Clients commission Pebble Head Portraits of their loved ones, family, or a group and often given as a very personal and unique gift. Recent pieces have situated the group against an equally bespoke background and have included all sorts of requests, from seagulls to lego.

Jacqueline visualises the piece based on both visual and written references to the subject’s interests, work, life and character traits, given by the client.

“It helps to build a picture of the family, the setting, the dialogue and the process often very revealing. Just down to how members of the portrait are described, lives summarised, character and behaviour analysed in a sentence. I may question the relevance of some such details, but its actually surprising what comes through in the final piece, as the people take on their pebble persona. Many of those little comments somehow end up being illustrated, giving the subjects a likeness and a sense of humour to the narrative of the scene. I spend far too long on painting these. But its very rewarding, and a painting must run its course. By the time its finished I feel like I’ve met them and they are often blown away by the result.”

The Pebble Head Royal Family

I painted this piece to commemorate The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. It was created prior to the day of the wedding so I had to guess who would appear on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, and visualise how they would gather and what they might wear.

What make this painting unique is that I’ve caricatured the royals by sticking pebbles, as the heads to their bodies, on to the canvas. Using the natural markings, shape and contours of the pebbles and then painting on facial features. I’ve attempted to depict some figures with a real sense of likeness and humour; other characters may not be recognisable but play a part in the narrative of the now infamous scene. I reckon my prediction wasn’t far off. It was fun to compare my painting with the actual scene on the wedding day. Personally I think Camilla and Prince Philip (only his eye was painted, the rest of his features are purely the pebble) bear an uncanny resemblance.
