This painting by Brighton based artist Jacqueline Hammond has now been purchased by a collector from France on the Saatchi Online website.
The painting is a favourite of many and is actually the last in the ‘Brighton Tidal Sunsets’ series of paintings to be snapped up. All the original artworks in this series have now sold. The buildings of Kemptown and the Victorian arches that stretch the length of the seafront are detailed in the painting. Each piece in the collection (untypically) depicts the view looking east of Brighton Palace Pier towards the Marina, which isn’t often painted by Brighton’s artists.
Said goodbye to this painting today. It went to a customer who lives in Shaldon which is fitting as that’s the place in the distance, on the headland, The Ness, across the estuary of the River Teign, near Teignmouth in Devon. Where my family are from!

This painting ‘Breakthrough’ has been very popular, a best-selling print even, but for some reason I’ve hung on to it. That is until an old friend who had his eye on it several years ago got in touch to see if it was still available. I’m really pleased its going to a good home, and made someone I know really chuffed.
The other poppy painting sold on my website a few days later. ‘Field of Dreams’ is a larger canvas featuring a dreamy, imaginary landscape with fields of poppies bursting with life and colour.

The Signification of the Poppy’ series began with a painting created for a web based competition in 2007 – ‘Seeking Picasso’ in which I was a finalist.
In week 3 the theme was ‘A Troubled World’Â and the painting I produced was inspired by the situation in Afghanistan at the time and the metaphor of the poppy and its association with war.

After the painting challenge came to an end I was commissioned by one of the judges from Seeking Picasso to produce a series of paintings for The McNeill Gallery, Radlett, Hertfordshire. Synopsis to the Signification of the Poppy series:
The works finely depict the poppy as a metaphor. Some represent the emblem of poppy worn for Remembrance Day: another life, another loss. Others depict farmed opium poppies; their beauty offset by the reason for their existence, these represent the many current causes of conflict. In ‘A Troubled World’ and ‘Carpet of Red’ the suggestion of war is confirmed in the distance, where the rolling green hills when viewed more closely have a river of blood running between them, flowing down from the bloodshed in the barren, sandy, habituated hills.
Just proves beauty can be deceiving. A field of flowers; more than a pretty picture.

Jacqueline visualises the piece based on both visual and written references to the subject’s interests, work, life and character traits, given by the client.
“It helps to build a picture of the family, the setting, the dialogue and the process often very revealing. Just down to how members of the portrait are described, lives summarised, character and behaviour analysed in a sentence. I may question the relevance of some such details, but its actually surprising what comes through in the final piece, as the people take on their pebble persona. Many of those little comments somehow end up being illustrated, giving the subjects a likeness and a sense of humour to the narrative of the scene. I spend far too long on painting these. But its very rewarding, and a painting must run its course. By the time its finished I feel like I’ve met them and they are often blown away by the result.”
