We found this vaguely amusing article about The Monarchy having bad habits just like ‘us’ and picks up on the amount of times the royals have been caught on camera picking their nose.

The main reason for amusement at the article was not at the revelation that royalty could do such a thing, but it’s link to the subject of a particular painting of mine. One which has caught the attention of the media on several occasions.

I was even interviewed on BBC radio – listen to the interview about “risking being locked in the tower for treason with her commemorative mug for The Queen’s Jubilee…”

More about the competition:

Seeking Picasso is the grassroots arts infotainment project that in 2007 had a fantastic pilot run in Brighton.

10 local artists were picked from a longlist of around 150 and over a period of 12 weeks, they were given themes to paint to.

The results were displayed in the Right Here, Right Now gallery, next to Art At Five and also in the Arthouse underground bar venue, Western Road. The paintings were also judged, both by the public in an online vote and in eBay auctions and by a panel of five arts professionals from in and around Brighton and the South East.

The Pebble Head Royal Family

I painted this piece to commemorate The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. It was created prior to the day of the wedding so I had to guess who would appear on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, and visualise how they would gather and what they might wear.

What make this painting unique is that I’ve caricatured the royals by sticking pebbles, as the heads to their bodies, on to the canvas. Using the natural markings, shape and contours of the pebbles and then painting on facial features. I’ve attempted to depict some figures with a real sense of likeness and humour; other characters may not be recognisable but play a part in the narrative of the now infamous scene. I reckon my prediction wasn’t far off. It was fun to compare my painting with the actual scene on the wedding day. Personally I think Camilla and Prince Philip (only his eye was painted, the rest of his features are purely the pebble) bear an uncanny resemblance.

The Brighton Artists Open Houses is coming to a close for 2012, this weekend coming is the final weekend. Sat 26^th – Sunday 27^th May

So if you’re on an art hunt, in the area or if you are looking for something to do, why not come and see my paintings ‘in the flesh’! Painting by Jacqueline Hammond commissioned by fashion accessories designer Ethan K in 2012 to illustrate the Ethan K brand and heritage.

Jacqueline is exhibiting recent seascapes, the Acid Pavilion series and the latest decadent homewares products from her Smartdeco Collection. On display is her most recent commission, a very detailed street scene in 1940’s / 50’s Singapore for the fashion accessory designer Ethan K.

The JAG Gallery hosts avibrant community of professional artists who both exhibit and work in the gallery. The talented artists in residence work in a variety of disciplines, such as fine art, painting, illustration, product and interior design, poetry and writing. They are available for commissions.

Queenie ‘Nose’ She Picked a Diamond Year!

This irreverent image of Her Majesty is a painting by British artist Jacqueline Hammond. Created in 2007 titled ‘The Queen in a Moment of Privacy’

Jacqueline has released some alternative memorabilia to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee latest hype in the UK and the large proportion of people who are ambivalent about the monarchy, or simply don’t like pomp and plastic tat, may wonder what the fuss is about. Some of the Diamond Jubilee memorabilia takes itself far too seriously, such as those plaster Queens, commemorative plates and ceramic corgis. Other items descend into utter tack, such as Union Jack dresses, tutus, wigs and plastic hats that will no doubt be appearing in Benidorm this summer.

These collector’s items depict an iconic, postage stamp type portrait of Her Majesty enjoying a private moment; in which she is caught in the ‘disgusting but we all do it’ act of picking her nose. The original work entitled ‘The Queen in a Moment of Privacy’ was an entry in the ‘Seeking Picasso’ competition, held in Brighton during 2007, in which Jacqueline was a finalist. She also caricatured the Royal Family on other occasions: for example, in 2011, her ‘Pebble Heads Royal Wedding’ painting used pebbles carefully selected from Brighton Beach as the character’s heads.

So, no need to buy an expensive porcelain plate that you’ll only use once or twice or a plastic union jack this summer, why not shirk the trend say “hurrumph” to the royal family and choose one of my alternative ideas to commemorate?

Choose from bags, mugs and prints all set to adorn the shoulders, coffee tables and walls of UK citizens who don’t want to stand in the street cheering and waving flags.
