This irreverent image of Her Majesty is a painting by British artist Jacqueline Hammond. Created in 2007 titled ‘The Queen in a Moment of Privacy’

Jacqueline has released some alternative memorabilia to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee latest hype in the UK and the large proportion of people who are ambivalent about the monarchy, or simply don’t like pomp and plastic tat, may wonder what the fuss is about. Some of the Diamond Jubilee memorabilia takes itself far too seriously, such as those plaster Queens, commemorative plates and ceramic corgis. Other items descend into utter tack, such as Union Jack dresses, tutus, wigs and plastic hats that will no doubt be appearing in Benidorm this summer.

These collector’s items depict an iconic, postage stamp type portrait of Her Majesty enjoying a private moment; in which she is caught in the ‘disgusting but we all do it’ act of picking her nose. The original work entitled ‘The Queen in a Moment of Privacy’ was an entry in the ‘Seeking Picasso’ competition, held in Brighton during 2007, in which Jacqueline was a finalist. She also caricatured the Royal Family on other occasions: for example, in 2011, her ‘Pebble Heads Royal Wedding’ painting used pebbles carefully selected from Brighton Beach as the character’s heads.

So, no need to buy an expensive porcelain plate that you’ll only use once or twice or a plastic union jack this summer, why not shirk the trend say “hurrumph” to the royal family and choose one of my alternative ideas to commemorate?

Choose from bags, mugs and prints all set to adorn the shoulders, coffee tables and walls of UK citizens who don’t want to stand in the street cheering and waving flags.

Art critics or curators – who would like to write about my work?

Calling all those art critics, curators and bloggers in the blogsphere who write about art.  Can you help? Would you like to write about me?

I am trying to write a new artists statement / biography and finding it difficult. It’s that age old problem of trying to write objectively about your own work. I can write about the creation process and the work itself but to write a punchy and succinct summary about what I do is rather tricky.

If you write about art and would like to give it a go, I am offering a mounted print of your choice if I use your words.

I need 80 to 100 words to be published on my page (pictured below) in the new brochure for JAG Gallery In Brighton where I exhibit and paint.

Hidden Stories

They’re only sketches but I did them for HOUSE Open as part of Artists Open Houses in Brighton in May. The theme is ‘Hidden Stories’ so I started studying some old, fading photographs of my grandparents.

Pebble Heads Portrait – Jacqueline Hammond (acrylics 29x21cm)

This painting is a commissioned portrait for a client who’s giving it to his wife as a Valentine’s Day present. They’re collecting it tomorrow.

I have an ongoing series of paintings known as The Pebble Heads which depict people on a trip to the seaside here in Brighton, England. This is a popular series with visitors to JAG Gallery in Brighton, where I exhibit them. I can often be spotted scrabbling around on the beach collecting suitable shaped pebbles for these paintings.

I paint the subjects bodies directly on to the canvas but paint their facial features on to pebbles, incorporating the contours and markings of the pebbles.  I then  glue the pebbles to the canvas.

Most of the subjects in the series are based on my observations of people, but often the pebbles ‘become’ characters once features are painted on. The scene, the pose, the narrative of the portrait seem to occur simultaneously and becomes a caricature as painting progresses.

I accept commissions for portraits of family groups, couples or groups of friends. The client just emails photographs of the people to include in the portrait. A photo of the group is ideal as well as ones of the individuals, but it’s important to know the difference in height. I also ask for a few details about things such as favourite clothing, colours, accessories and an idea of character traits is also useful.
