Who invented the deck chair?

NOOKS AND CRANNIES – The Guardian online

Who invented the deck chair?

THE FIRST chair of this type – that is, the folding X-type chair – was discovered in the tombs of the ancient Egyptians: often carved with animal forms and covered with whole skins. In ancient Rome, too, the folding X-type chair had great significance, being reserved for magistrates and nobles on public occasions. There are also references to folding chairs in 17th-century inventories. ‘Six folding chaires of crimson vellvet trymmed with gold lace’ were sold by order of the Council of State after the execution of Charles I. Bernard Shilling, New Barnet, Herts.

JOHN Thomas Moore (1864-1929) took out a patent for adjustable folding chairs in 1886 and manufactured them in Macclesfield from 1887. The ‘Waverley’ model was described as the best ship or lawn tennis chair, while the ‘Hygienic’ was a rocking chair ‘valuable for those with sluggish and constipated bowels. Its action is perfect massage without the toilsome labour.’
Colin Sanders, Macclesfield, Cheshire.

A man surnamed Atkins in the 19th century adapted it but putting sailors hammock material on it. I learnt this as I knew family members who still received royalties from his patent.

With summer just round the corner, the long-awaited ‘deckchair season’ is here. In the last fortnight alone, we’ve received numerous requests from the media asking to showcase our deckchairs in their publications. Our deckchairs recently appeared in Devon Life, the Independent’s ‘Best Deckchair’ list and The Sun’s Fabulous Magazine’s ‘Lust List’, with further accolades to come soon.

Country Lane Deckchair by Jacqueline Hammond in Devon Life Magazine

20140517-020416.jpg

Just heard that the Country Lane Deckchair is featured in the current edition of Devon Life magazine.

Poignantly, as this week marks a family anniversary, the timing is immaculate for publication, as the picture is actually inspired by the countryside of Devon, its where I grew up. I wonder if the editor knows this?

The original painting is titled Mum’s Drive Home and depicts a beautiful country lane which leads across the fringe of the forest on Haldon Moor in south west England. The scenery of South Devon is firmly set in my mind and this area, the drive from Teignmouth to Chudleigh was the route home from my grandparents and my Mum’s Drive Home. Must drive there soon!

The First Drop of Spring

With much of the UK having been stricken with floods during early 2014, it may be hard to imagine summer in full-swing but the weather is on the upturn. Spring is here and its time to get out there!

I’ve been getting more daring, even attempted a walk in the woods for an Easter egg hunt, but I’ve have been thinking what a battering the garden’s taken over the winter months.

The dash across the ‘lawn’ which had become a Glastonbury style mud fest, to dive in the shed to grab materials had to be done in about five, trousers rolled up, tip toe like steps, in a monster like fashion. Then back one final leap back to the safety of the astro turf. Such a good alternative to homegrown turf.

Well fingers crossed, I’m not exclaiming its warm enough to take your overcoat off but I do believe Spring has definitely sprung! Here’s some images showing the signs of spring.
