NOOKS AND CRANNIES – The Guardian online

Who invented the deck chair?

THE FIRST chair of this type – that is, the folding X-type chair – was discovered in the tombs of the ancient Egyptians: often carved with animal forms and covered with whole skins. In ancient Rome, too, the folding X-type chair had great significance, being reserved for magistrates and nobles on public occasions. There are also references to folding chairs in 17th-century inventories. ‘Six folding chaires of crimson vellvet trymmed with gold lace’ were sold by order of the Council of State after the execution of Charles I. Bernard Shilling, New Barnet, Herts.

JOHN Thomas Moore (1864-1929) took out a patent for adjustable folding chairs in 1886 and manufactured them in Macclesfield from 1887. The ‘Waverley’ model was described as the best ship or lawn tennis chair, while the ‘Hygienic’ was a rocking chair ‘valuable for those with sluggish and constipated bowels. Its action is perfect massage without the toilsome labour.’
Colin Sanders, Macclesfield, Cheshire.

A man surnamed Atkins in the 19th century adapted it but putting sailors hammock material on it. I learnt this as I knew family members who still received royalties from his patent.

With summer just round the corner, the long-awaited ‘deckchair season’ is here. In the last fortnight alone, we’ve received numerous requests from the media asking to showcase our deckchairs in their publications. Our deckchairs recently appeared in Devon Life, the Independent’s ‘Best Deckchair’ list and The Sun’s Fabulous Magazine’s ‘Lust List’, with further accolades to come soon.

The First Drop of Spring

With much of the UK having been stricken with floods during early 2014, it may be hard to imagine summer in full-swing but the weather is on the upturn. Spring is here and its time to get out there!

I’ve been getting more daring, even attempted a walk in the woods for an Easter egg hunt, but I’ve have been thinking what a battering the garden’s taken over the winter months.

The dash across the ‘lawn’ which had become a Glastonbury style mud fest, to dive in the shed to grab materials had to be done in about five, trousers rolled up, tip toe like steps, in a monster like fashion. Then back one final leap back to the safety of the astro turf. Such a good alternative to homegrown turf.

Well fingers crossed, I’m not exclaiming its warm enough to take your overcoat off but I do believe Spring has definitely sprung! Here’s some images showing the signs of spring.

Put an end to retailers categorising toys according to gender

The Entertainer takes down gendered signage – article

Great news and good progress made towards putting an end to retailers categorising toys according to gender. Toy retailer, The Entertainer has re categorised the toys it sells and will no longer use gender specific signage. Hooray!

I’ve been banging on about this for years, basically it boils down to blatant gender stereotyping. It’s rife when you think about it.

Labelling toys as pink or blue, girls or boys. Separate aisles for what’s classed as boys or girls toys. Pushing children (and parents) towards objects of play, ways to behave, things to do, that have been decided are for either girls or boys, not both.  Thus reinforcing stereotypes of what it is to be male or female, right from the off. The Early Learning Centre. This is where it all starts. The rot sets in and girls begin their towards the sparkly world of looking pretty, acting dumb and becoming a princess.

Can’t bear the way they have aisles of pink packaged fluff for girls and label construction or making toys as blue so girls don’t want them because they’re boys toys. In the early years children are oblivious to this, everything is an object to explore, yet to be labelled, everything’s potentially a toy! It’s adults, society that apply the labels and supply the constructs of signified meaning of what the object is.

Children are mirrors and copycats, they want to do as we do, they copy each other and are particularly interested in what the elder ones are doing. This appears to have more sway than what gender the toys are stereotyped as.

They may well develop favourites, but its ‘us’ that decides they are into it because they are a boy, or a girl. Having grown up with society’s constructs on how to behave, parents may well encourage play with the toys that reinforce their child’s gender, over another, that labels their child as a ‘tomboy’ or ‘cissy.’ My sister once said, why do you always give my kids toys that involve sticks, because they always end up fighting with them.

My daughter went from playing with all sorts of bits and bobs, including the predominantly vehicle and construction based hand-me-down toys My youngest has the pick of the bunch as he’s got all the things they barely played with anyway, Im glad they get another chance of use. And it happens that the best kept and plentiful collections are those of his father. As in his day, kids took care of their toys. Personally I’d rather suggest playing with the Matchbox vehicles too.

He also watches the older ones on various digital games which are predominantly about ‘taking things out.’ So whether annihilating opponents or blowing things up, this invokes excitement from the otherwise occupied siblings. So it’s no wonder the little one shouts out ‘Sire!’ This cracks me up.

Forced between choosing a a pink or a blue low level table once in The Early Learning Centre, I muttered to myself, why don’t they have a yellow, or green, a non-gender-specific colour and thought how ridiculous that I knew my daughter would want the pink one of course, because blue is a boys colour. I bought a T shirt in a charity shop, for my daughter. I liked it because it was green and because it had a cool robot on it. When I got home I noticed the writing on it said, ‘only for boys’ , we both agreed this was stupid and she would wear it anyway, she liked robots too. Furthermore it served as a good example of ignoring the nonsense and playing, doing, wearing what you like. She’s getting it.

Need to sort out advertising and packaging design next.

Let children be children, and toys be toys. Let them decide what they want to play with…. which tends to be a computer or console from 5+ these days. Gaming world dead guilty of gender stereotyping too. I could go on, perhaps I will. Pleased in recent years to read others writing and campaigning on this now. Such as the Pink Stinks campaign, (what was that book?) Keep up the good work (will add contacts, groups, campaigns etc)

TBC… tired now and haven’t tidied the toys away yet!

Shitfaced Shakespeare Drunketh Review – Brighton Fringe 2013

It’s the final week of Brighton Fringe 2014 and Shitfaced Shakespeare are on the bill again this year –

Magnificent Bastard Productions present an entirely serious Shakespeare play with an entirely shit-faced cast member.

The question is – Dareth one attendeth the play again?

Here’s the review I wrote (whilst shitfaced) after last year’s show.

Too shit tyo get shitfaced enough for Shakespeare (written upon return home and published unedited) I had heard of this act early on and thought it had the potential to go either way. Scripted inerbriatiation bad. Genuine drunk as a lord, evil as Macbeth, good. Extra good if it went proper tits up, on stage and everything. In Shakespeares’s day the scirpt would be embellished by the amount of tankards one had dis quenchenched in thy hour of performancing. Althought pre-ibterigued as a on a whim mainly arts goer I wasn’t even sure wgich friend ahd experessed the dame curiosity anf interest to as feature in Brighton Festoval’s programme entitled @Shitfaced Shajkespeare’ The embarrassment of scripted out of it ness would be too muvh to bear. Like some sort of @who wants to be an othellioanaire. Pre warned  after a midday bath, at 2pm I agreed to go bujt thought to myself only thy right to get shitfaced too. Get with the programme. Else I might cringe at the pre rehearsed what dol people do when they are drunk type sjetccjesd. Hence I be gone pre told emcompance a couplet winettas. This was my main fear, scripted shitfacedness. Would the actors be genuinely drunk and it all turn to shit, or would they be slightly inebriated and looser, forgetful with their words leading to it completely turning to shit and brabdished as a load of shit. How would they gauges their intended level of shotfacedness? Pre tell? Give me a line, give me a line slurred Lysander. Well, having now witnessed the performance I can genuinely say I wsas rifgt there with Lysandaer, Demetrias is a twat and it must be fucking uncomfortable pretending to be sleep ed on ye stager floor. MEGA cool, I hearteth the hour behind the most unusual,  secret venue @ The Warren, like back stage Churchill Square crossed with council estate block. Mental.. Mazing what a yurt and fairy lights can do to festival up urban neck central. It was fuckin’ brilliant, swearing shapera id @How’s about that then’ more than @How do you as you like it. Whether guniunely pissed enough or not. After the show Lysanders fair maidens procured his rudimentary water and he admitted he didn’t say cunt as much as in |EDinvurgh. A diiferent member of the cast is drunk each night. I’d quite like to compare the comedy of errors that ensues. A Midsummer theobvious choice of mixed amourous intentuons. It lightened the shakesperaren foh, we lah de dahed at the nymophs attempts to stroken  with serious spouting bjt chuckled at the fuck it crack ups thatgave it brilliance. There were elements of she’s fucki brilliant toomany times, I twas constantly cracked me up. Whern Lysander went from forgetting his words tyo spouting off Louis/Helena’s the genuine shitfacedness shone through/ I chorkled too early, had to run off mid show for ther low pisswosair but was rifgt there with the programme and having met Lysander after the show would say it was a mid summer dreamt come true!
