Europe’s first rainbow crossing in Brighton painted on the road outside JAG Gallery

Heather Peace unveils Europe’s first rainbow crossing in Brighton for LGBT Pride Month.

Madeira Drive in Brighton was given a bold makeover last weekend as street artwork representing Europe’s first official ‘rainbow crossing’ was unveiled to celebrate the release of We Can Change, a new song celebrating LGBT Pride month and championing equal rights by actress, musician and local resident, Heather Peace.

Created by local artists, the rainbow stretches across the road at the artists’ quarter of Madeira Drive and is expected to attract hundreds of people keen to follow the rainbow brick road for the first time in Europe.

Sneak Peek at a Painting in Progress

Here’s a sneak peek at a painting I’m working on today.

Every year to mark the winter solstice much of Brighton come down to the seafront for Burning of the Clocks organised by community arts organisation Same Sky. I want to capture the way the crowd leaning on the railings are lit up by the fireworks and the sky has an eerie glow.

About Burning the Clocks
For almost two decades, Burning the Clocks has become a special date in Brighton’s calendar. Taking place on the winter solstice, this fantastical procession brings magic to the streets, with a stream of luminous lanterns and a spectacular 2,000-strong parade.

When the winter carnival has wound its way to the beach, people pass their handmade paper and willow lanterns – filled symbolically with their hopes and dreams – into a blazing bonfire and prepare for the spectacular fire show and firework display.

Held on the shortest day (longest night) of the year, this growing tradition marks the passing of time by ‘burning the clocks’ and welcoming in the new sun. With over 20,000 spectators, this popular event turns the spotlight away from the more commercial side of Christmas and lights up the darkest of winter nights.

Burning the Clocks was created by Same Sky in 1994 as a way for the whole community to enjoy the festive season, regardless of faith or creed. Each year a new theme, related to the concept of time, is incorporated into the event to bring new and exciting elements.

As part of the event, Same Sky carries out free lantern-making community workshops for disadvantaged local people. Some of those we work with are homeless young people, single fathers, and young carers. We encourage them to make something they are proud of, fire them up with creative passion and bring them together with their community through the shared experience of art.

Dressing up as Artists – Brighton Festival 2014 Children’s Parade

The children from my daughters school were in the parade dressed as artists, with a giant tube of yellow paint. She told me she’d showed them my website and although pleased she was proud of me, I felt a bit bad that I was too busy to go and help with the preparations. We put on our art overalls, my old lab coat heavy with dried acrylic, grabbed some easels. The kids had made palettes and paint brushes, I had to bring real ones! I was touched to find out that they were really inspired by my paintings and produced their own pieces based on what they’d seen. How lovely. We had a great time in the parade, lovely day, so many smiley people!! Going to do some art projects with the kids at school.in the future.

      Rewild Interiors is the creation of textile designer, Emily Kenneally, who designs and manufactures quirky printed homewares including cushions, aprons and tea towels. Emily spends her time watching David Attenborough documentaries and visiting natural history museums, her favorite being the Booth Museum in Brighton, which she says has the most incredible collection of insect specimens. Emily finds the subject of insects endlessly fascinating and her prints explore the beauty of their patterns and shapes. ‘Rewild Interiors’ is taken from the ecological term ‘rewilding’ meaning to return a habitat to a natural state through the introduction of wildlife. Emily looks to childhood memories and evoking that sense of intrigue we once had with the natural world (especially creepy crawleys) and her aim is to re-introduce these beautiful wild creatures back into your life. Working from a little beach hut at JAG Gallery on Brighton seafront, Emily brings her insect specimens back to life, injecting them with her own sense of style and imagination. Living at a time when wildlife is facing extinction on an unprecedented scale, at the core of Emily’s design ethos is sustainability. The Rewild Interiors collection celebrates the beauty of the natural world while trying to conserve it through responsible manufacturing, with all products being made in the UK, using organic cotton.
