The first of its kind in the UK, created to coincide with LGBT Pride Month, the Rainbow Crossing provides a notable tourist attraction while giving pedestrians a safe place to cross this busy part of the seafront. In just a few days, the social media-led Rainbow Crossing Forever campaign has gained a groundswell of support from Brighton residents and the LGBT community. The aim of the campaign is to retain the crossing beyond LGBT Pride Month, to aid road safety and to put the neglected east side of Brighton Pier back on the map. The Rainbow Crossing is proving extremely popular with visitors to Brighton and is literally stopping traffic.

The installation of the Rainbow Crossing also coincides with the release of the song ‘We Can Change’ by actress, musician and local resident, Helen Pearce. This song has been launched to celebrate LGBT Pride and champion equal rights. Says Jacqueline Hammond: “The Rainbow Crossing provides a potent symbol that is highly relevant to Brighton’s heritage as Britain’s LGBT capital. It should be allowed to remain in place.”

As part of the Rainbow Crossing Forever campaign, the crossing will TODAY [?] be adorned with Art Print Deckchairs from Jacqueline Hammond’s contemporary home-ware outlet, Smart Deco. The deckchairs will give visitors a moment to rest and enjoy the seafront panorama, before crossing the road safely. The Art Print Deckchairs feature scenic views reproduced on the canvas slings. One of the most popular designs – the ‘Life’s a Beach’ deckchair – depicts a bird’s eye view of Brighton seafront; another features an ‘Ultraviolet Jellyfish’.  Says Jaqueline: “The Art Print Deckchairs are the perfect accompaniment to the Rainbow Crossing, both being vibrant and diverse.”

She adds: “The Rainbow Crossing is gaining a lot of attention. As well as providing a safe place to cross busy Madeira Drive, it is a striking feature when viewed from the promenade above. It could be an important new tourist attraction in this vibrant seaside city. The Rainbow Crossing could also bring considerable trade to the east side of the pier over summer months, if we can gain enough support to persuade Brighton & Hove Council not to remove it during the coming week.”

Artist Jacqueline Hammond depicts the Queen enjoying a private and unusual moment 

May 17, 2012, Press Dispensary. With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee fast approaching, a public backlash is starting to occur against the hype and twee memorabilia flooding the UK. Renowned Brighton-based fine artist, Jacqueline Hammond, is ahead of this trend and is unleashing a ‘commemorative’ mug with a difference, featuring the Queen enjoying a private moment… picking her nose. Entitled ‘Queenie Nose She’s Picked a Diamond Year 2012’, the mug is set to adorn the coffee tables of UK citizens who don’t want to stand in the street waving flags.

The anti-commemorative mug is based on Jacqueline’s original painting of the same name, which was originally an entry in the ‘Seeking Picasso’ competition, held in Brighton during 2007 and in which Jacqueline was a finalist. With a Facebook group called ‘Bollocks to the Queen’s Jubilee’ gaining ‘likes’, and plans afoot to re-release the anarchic 1977 Sex Pistols’ ‘God Save the Queen’ single before 5 June, it seems that people are ready for alternative memorabilia – be it a mug or a full-size portrait of the Queen – that provides an alternative to the twee trinket boxes, monarchy-themed tea towels, fancy-dress hats and Union Jack Flags that are invariably made in China.

Artist and alternative memorabilia creator, Jacqueline Hammond, says: “The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is the latest hype in the UK. The large proportion of people who are ambivalent about the monarchy, or simply don’t like pomp and plastic tat, may wonder what the fuss is about. Some of the Diamond Jubilee memorabilia takes itself far too seriously, such as those plaster Queens, commemorative plates and ceramic corgis. Other items descend into utter tack, such as Union Jack dresses, tutus, wigs and plastic hats that will no doubt be appearing in Benidorm this summer.”

The ‘Country Lane’ deckchair, with its enticing avenue of trees, is based on Jacqueline’s painting, ‘Mum’s Drive Home’. It depicts an atmospheric drive down a winding road from the South Devon coastal town, Teignmouth, over Haldon Hill / Forest to Jacqueline’s home town of Chudleigh. Her mother used to commute using that route and the painting was produced in her memory.

With its pleasing perspective, it evokes the feeling of travelling down a country lane with the roof down, feeling the cooling breeze, seeing dancing dappled sun spots, anticipating finding a tucked-away rural pub or picnic spot.

Third in the series, the ‘Santa Fe Fields’ deckchair is based on a scene at the Santa Fe hot springs near Granada in Spain, which are popular for their naturally beautiful bathing opportunity. With its smattering of poppies bursting with colour and dotting the landscape, it reproduces a pastoral idyll and evokes ideas of picnics in spring meadows, a summer ramble across country to a private spot to while away an afternoon, time spent contemplating life in a tranquil setting. Built around a sturdy hardwood frame with a teak oil finish, measuring H105cm x D102cm x W56cm, each deckchair features a heavy duty cotton canvas that is fully washable.
